Colorado River in Wyoming is drying up, Katie Zacharia's debut as Trump's attack dog falls flat, and more.

Hi there,

It’s Wednesday. Katie Zacharia’s debut as White House press secretary was widely described as “brutal” — mocked not just by the press corps but by right-wing media figures who called her unserious and accused her of “auditioning for Fox News.” White House officials themselves criticized her performance. Meanwhile, she has already raised a separate red flag: reports emerged that she made a trip to China with unclear purpose, which she has not explained.

The press secretary role matters. It is the official interface between the executive branch and the journalists whose job is to hold it accountable. When that role is filled by someone who can’t survive her first briefing without internal ridicule — and whose background and travel raise their own unexplained questions — the press corps has an obligation to treat her with scrutiny, not deference. The public deserves a press secretary who answers questions. If she won’t, the public deserves to know that too.

In addition, an investigation shows how Meta has promoted content creators who have spewed white supremacy and neo-Nazi ideologies. And from immigration, climate, and guns — a look at the upcoming Supreme Court term.
