Protests are continuing outside of Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, cities are covering their Flock cameras, and more.

Hi there,

It’s Monday. Tech billionaires are pouring money into California elections this year, though the reported numbers may just be the tip of the iceberg. Cities aren’t sure how to cancel their surveillance contracts with Flock and have resorted to covering the cameras with trash bags.

And protests continue outside of Newark, New Jersey’s ICE detention facility as ICE agents pepper-spray and beat detainees for protesting horrific conditions inside Delaney Hall.

Yet too much media coverage treats these clashes as routine disputes between protesters and law enforcement rather than examining the constitutional rights at stake. When federal authorities use their power in ways that chill public dissent, the public deserves reporting that clearly identifies the threat to free expression and democratic participation.

The public deserves reporting that recognizes when government power is being used against those exercising their constitutional rights. A democracy cannot function if people are afraid to speak out against those in power.
